10,000 sea turtles released on Yucatan coasts in 2018

The Marine Turtle Care and Rehabilitation Program of the Yucatan Coast (PARTMACY) continues to work for the conservation and protection of this species, and according to reports from members, the year 2018 was a good one for marine turtle preservation in the State .

The Partmacy is an organization created by aquaculture teaching staff of Cetmar # 17, in order to protect and raise awareness about the care of sea turtles, as well as to raise funds for their study and care.

According to David Ferrón, collaborator with the organization, last year the release of 10,500 turtles was achieved, which represents an increase in egg hatching of 85%. These turtles were born mostly in the nest farm in the facilities of Cetmar # 17 in the port of Progreso, where 70 nests are currently being cared for.

The organization does not have large resources to cover the costs of operating the species or research, so they have sought the support of individuals and, according to members of this organization, have found considerable support from the Canadian and American communities who perform events to benefit the Partmacy.

The program will continue this year and they hope to continue gathering enough funds to carry out actions to protect these species and encourage citizens to avoid driving their cars on the beaches, since newborn turtles can be crushed by vehicles.
