Yucatan tourist “avalanche” reported for Holy Week holidays

A large number of domestic and foreign tourists have appeared throughout the Historic Center of Mérida and the main destinations of Yucatan during this holiday period, reported the National Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Services of Merida (Canaco Servytur).

The chamber estimated that the economic impact will be 5 percent higher than the $1.2 billion pesos that were collected last year. According to the reports, during the first days of the Holy Week holidays, the restaurants, parks, taxi services, carriages, convenience stores and handicrafts vendors are showing intense activity, which will be maintained this weekend, especially by the presence of national tourism.

As every year, the places where the greatest concentration of people is expected is on the beaches, where local, national and foreign visitors have been arriving since last weekend. In these sites the restaurateurs report a significant increase in sales.

Also, hotels affiliated with the Canaco-Servytur de Mérida reported 100% reservations for the two weeks of this holiday period.

Nationwide, according to the Canaco -Servytur, along with the city of Merida, the most visited places this weekend are Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Acapulco, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Riviera Nayarita, Veracruz, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Manzanillo.

They expect a large number of tourists in colonial cities such as Morelia, Zacatecas, Durango, Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Queretaro and Guanajuato and in the 121 magical towns of Mexico.

In the Merida International Airport approximately 6,000 passengers have been arriving every day from the the beginning of this week, due to the national and international tourism promotion of the State, confirmed the Asur group that manages the airport.
