‘Malltertainment’: Giant complex La Isla opens formally

With the generation of more than two thousand direct and indirect jobs and an investment of just over 2.5 billion pesos, La Isla Mérida formally opened its doors to the public.

According to the CEO of Grupo Gicsa, Abraham Cababie Daniel, the commercial plaza in northern Merida is the second largest in the country with this concept, after the one in Puebla. Sixteen more are planned to be built.

“It is an area of 170 thousand square meters with 190 thousand of construction, and a varied offer of the most prestigious brands and about 150 food operators, between restaurants, bars and other concepts,” said Cababie Daniel.

The traditional cutting of the ribbon was attended by the Mayor of Mérida, Renán Barrera Concha, who stressed that the investment amount of the project, which is equivalent to 66 percent of the budget received by the Yucatecan capital throughout the year, is from Mexican business groups.

Also present at the event was the Secretary of Economic Development and Labor, Ernesto Herrera Novelo, who celebrated the investment of Mexican capital, and noted that for Yucatan, foreign investment increased by 37.9 percent, but that of national entrepreneurs now doubles that percentage.

In addition to the ribbon-cutting, the officials and corporate executives made a tour of the corridors and walkers of the shopping plaza, which offers, among other attractions, an artificial lake, as well as a large auditorium with capacity for five thousand people.

The concept of the site is referred to as malltertainment, indicating the offer is a shopping center and various diversions and complementary entertainment services.
