One arrest in stabbing death of Canadian in Progreso

PROGRESO — So far, police report a single arrest in the stabbing death of a Canadian man Friday April 19 in an apartment in Progreso.

The suspect, identified by police as Carlos Ernesto C.P., 31, was arrested Monday in Motul, police said. The accused man is said to be a Progreso native.

Bruce Allen, 70, of Dartmouth, Novia Scotia, was found Friday by his partner in their vacation apartment with multiple stab wounds to his neck and chest, a family member said.

Allen was renting an apartment in Progreso, where he reportedly was a well-liked member of the expat community.

Mexican federal police are conducting the homicide investigation, said Progreso police commander Carlos Burgos.

An autopsy is being performed, Burgos said.

Canadian consular officials are providing assistance to the family, according to Global Affairs spokesperson Amy Mills.

In an emailed statement, she said no further information can be disclosed due to provisions under the Privacy Act.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who died in Mexico,” she said.
