Public urged to dispose “techno-garbage” correctly

If it was thought that only fecal waste and agrochemicals contributed to the contamination of the water table, household appliances also add to the list. It is estimated that in Mexico a person produces about 10 kilos of “techno-garbage” per year, so Yucatan is looking for its collection to be channeled to a final destination.

During the presentation of the Expo Environmental Forum 2019, the biologist Miguel Carbajal Rodríguez, representative of the Business Coalition against Climate Change, showed his concern about this problem and the need to create a culture of consumption in society.

Meanwhile, the state secretary of Urban Development and Environment, Sayda Rodríguez Gómez, acknowledged that only the municipal garbage dump of Mérida is appropriate and protects garbage and waste.

Regarding the forum, the coalition aims to generate actions to mitigate and help adapt society to Climate Change and joins the Expo to promote Reciclatón, a project aimed at collecting the so-called “techno-garbage”.

“We want to raise awareness that what is bought sooner or later is discarded, because today is not only a serious problem for the world, but for the state. The phreatic mantle, by the type of soil that you have and the delicacy of the peninsula in terms of its ecosystem, is in danger.

In previous editions of the event, a volume of 35 tons of household appliances was registered. This year the goal is to reach 10 tons.

It should be noted that there is no space for the recycling of these devices in the state open to the public, so during the three days of the Forum the Convention Center will serve as one.

ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM

At a press conference that served as a framework for the signing of a collaboration agreement between the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) and the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Servytur), the president of the business underscored that sustainability ceased to be a fashionable subject to become an issue of importance for all social sectors.

Therefore, he highlighted the growing number of companies to join this commitment that can open new markets and have greater acceptance before more demanding consumers. This year they expect 20 thousand visitors.

DEFICIENT DUMPS

Meanwhile, Rodríguez Gómez said that eight large municipal garbage dumps do not meet the conditions to sort waste and keep it in suitable sites for final disposal. He explained that the agency he heads analyzes and evaluates the 300 permits received by the pig companies that are operating in the state and they have until April to correct violations.
