Chi Kung or Qi Gong is a medicinal therapy of Chinese origin that belongs to the same group as other therapies such as taichi or reiki. All of them come from the Eastern tradition and support its principles in the importance of channeling the vital energy (Qi) adequately through the different meridians that run through our body.According to these principles, the good state of one’s health depends on our ability to achieve the correct balance between the mind and the body; and this well-being is achieved, mainly, through meditation and control of breathing. In fact, the literal translation of chi kung would be “the work of breathing”, since this therapeutic method emphasizes the importance of our breathing being conscious and accompanying each of our movements and thoughts.

Also known as “fountain of youth”, those who practice it assure that it helps them to eliminate the tensions and stress of everyday life and that it is an authentic flow of peace that brings them health and vitality. The essence of chi kung or qi gong is the harmonic synchronization of the three vital processes, that is, body, mind (heart) and respiration.

Eastern tradition refers to these three processes as the “three treasures.” Therefore, the practice of this therapy requires, in turn, three steps. The first is the control of the body, that is, relaxation. We must relax, in this order, our mind, our breathing and, finally, our body. The purpose of this is that, in doing so, the channels or meridians through which our vital energy circulates are opened, allowing it to flow correctly.

The next step is to regulate the breathing until we get it done in a constant and calm way. When it comes to practicing this process, chi kung recommends the use of eight keywords (or ways of breathing) that will help us as a guide to achieve it satisfactorily.

And in the last place would be the control of the mind or heart. This step is intrinsic to the previous two, that is, if we manage to relax our body and our breathing successfully, our mind or heart will relax and be at peace.
The practice of chi kung or qi gong can be both static and moving. In either case, it is very important to be well supported, meaning that our body is in a balanced position and in firm contact with the ground.Text and photo: Agency
