Relocation of street vendors from Chichén Itzá still pending

Efforts to resolve the situation of the artisans who work inside the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá are ongoing, as officials hope to give sellers a decent space to do their work, said the Director of the Board of the Cultural and Tourist Units of the State of Yucatan (Cultur), Mauricio Díaz Montalvo.

He specified that the Federal Government, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), in coordination with the State Government, is analyzing the options to resolve the conflict that has prevailed for several years on this site.

He acknowledged that currently the archaeological zone has an excess of vendors — more than one thousand.

“But they were there before we arrived and what we are seeing is that they do not enter anymore,” the official said.

He said that the efforts will progress in time and form during the year, so that the merchants have a safe place to market their products and improve their sales, and tourism is maintained.

He mentioned that when an agreement is reached, Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal will go out to announce it, “but for that he will be postponing a little time, we are now analyzing all the options together with the Federal Government to reach an agreement”.

He recognized the importance of working with the federation, providing the facilities and offering them a space where they can work and “we are all at ease”.
