Residents warn that beach erosion continues in Progreso, Chicxulub

The loss of beaches continues in the areas between the port of Progreso and the Chicxulub community. According to citizens, there is less and less sand and the sea is even closer to the buildings.

In a tour of beaches between Progreso and Chicxulub, it was possible to confirm that, in effect, the loss of sandy stretches is more noticeable. In certain areas there is a distance of only about four meters between buildings and the sea; this occurs mainly in the areas of beach houses and condominiums located between both communities.

In Progreso, after the beaches of the boardwalk, the extensions of sand begin to decline noticeably. This problem has been increasing year after year.

The erosion of beaches is a phenomenon that has affected the port for several years, the same problem that has already occurred in areas of Chelem Puerto, where the Secretariat of Urban Development and Environment (Seduma), now known as the Secretariat of Sustainable Development of the Government of the State of Yucatan (SDS), had to intervene with beach rescue projects.

The residents of the beach areas between Progreso and Chicxulub also alerted that beach rescue is needed in these areas, since otherwise the loss of these stretches of sand could continue and would affect the summer houses and condominiums with the closest proximity of the sea.

In addition, the environmental impact could be negative because the loss of beaches implies greater loss of coastal dunes, which would leave the port more vulnerable to the ravages of high winds.
