Treasures of Merida’s historic cathedral

Dedicated to San Ildefonso, Merida’s historic Cathedral was and is the first erected in continental America, that is, on the mainland. In the Americas, only the cathedral of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic is older.

As the oldest church in Mexico, the Cathedral of San Ildefonso is the most significant building in Merida.

The cathedral houses works of Yucatecan painters, such as a popularly-made image of the Virgin of the Candelaria, or a Roman copy that dates from 1903 in which the Holy Trinity appears.

In terms of sculptures, the most significant are one of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and another of San José created in the 17th century.
