United Nations recognizes Merida’s qualify of life

Mayor Renán Barrera Concha last week received from the hands of the President of the Republic, Enrique Peña Nieto, the Index of Prosperous Cities elaborated by UN Habitat that positions Mérida as the city with the best quality of life, in a ceremony that took place in the Banamex Center in Lomas de Sotelo in Mexico City.

The executive director of UN Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, delivered the full document of the study to President Peña Nieto, and he in turn gave her a symbolic representation of three cities, including Mérida.

The Index of Prosperous Cities jointly carried out by UN Habitat and Infonavit, allows to manage policies according to the needs and conditions detected in the cities.

Renán Barrera said that in the case of Mérida, there has been an advanced use of this index for the planning and implementation of programs and projects of the New Urban Agenda, focused on sustainable development.

He explained that the Index of Prosperous Cities measures the development of these through six aspects of prosperity: productivity, infrastructure, quality of life, equity and social inclusion, environmental sustainability, governance and urban legislation.

This index, he continued, allows projects to be developed with the aim of having safer and more resilient cities, since it not only measures economic prosperity, but also environmental prosperity, and Mérida is moving at a good pace in this regard.

He highlighted the fact that Mérida occupies the first place in quality of life among the 305 cities measured, which is an incentive to continue with the municipal work to achieve sustainability.

Through analyzes such as these, he said, local governments can identify opportunities and potential areas of intervention to define public policies with a future vision of the city based on the New Urban Agenda and the objectives of Sustainable Development.

In addition to the mayors of the cities included in the measurements, the secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Luis Videgaray, and of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development, Rosario Robles Berlanga, attended the event.
