Water and waste: Yucatan’s key sustainability issues for 2019

Starting her term as the new Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS), the head of this unit, Sayda Rodríguez Gómez, stressed that in 2019, the transformation to a vision of sustainable development and three other issues, will be the year’s priorities.

It is about the development of a “water strategy”, that is, a measure linked to water and the elements of safety, care and cleaning of it, the management of solid waste and the “treatment” of local protected areas.

“More than being a secretariat of the environment, what we are looking for in this stage or initial phase now as the Secretariat of Sustainable Development, is to move to a topic more focused on sustainable development,” the official said.

She added this new vision will have to be strongly linked to all levels of government, encourage citizen participation, and establish a strong link with the academic sector, private initiative and non-governmental organizations.

“The environmental issue is not limited only to its near field, which is precisely the environment, but it has basic aspects such as economic development and social development,” she said.

For this reason, she said, a “cross-sectional” model of operations should be established in water care issues, which demands the generation of a “water strategy”, as defined by the official.

Another is the management of solid waste, which involves issues of garbage and other waste, and these in turn relate to a theme of protection to the natural protected areas of the locality.

As is well known, the Secretariat of Urban Development and Environment (Seduma), now SDS, modified its institutional image and started its functions on the first day of this year, according to its director, this within the framework of the new model of environmental dependence of the State Government.
