Yucatan once again considered Mexico’s safest state

The state posts the fewest high-impact crimes nationwide during the first two months of 2018, according to Crime Traffic Light Reports…

Yucatan continues to stand out as the safest state in Mexico, over the 31 others, with the lowest records in high-impact crimes nationwide in the first two months of 2018, according to the organization Semáforo Delictivo (Crime Traffic Light).

As in the last quarter of 2017, the reports for January and February 2018 indicate Yucatan maintains satisfactory safety indexes that present it as one of the entities where the inhabitants live with greatest confidence and in a climate of peace. This is supported by the statistics of the civil organization chaired by Santiago Roel Rodríguez, which is based on the official figures of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

In the most recent analysis of the social project citizen Traffic Light, which appears on its website, through February, Yucatan added seven green lights from a total of 11 classifications, as it had the lowest impact values of all Mexico in the categories of homicides, kidnappings, extortion, theft of vehicles, homes and businesses, injuries and violations. Likewise, three new items were added: drug dealing, family violence and femicides, in which there is no red light.

The data to the court of Wednesday, February 28, show that in the territory four malicious murders were reported and no cases of kidnapping or extortion. On the other hand, 30 vehicle thefts were recorded and 18 businesses robbed. In addition, there were 28 proceedings for injuries and eight for sexual assault. Among the new rankings, that of family violence recorded 166 cases; no femicide, and 16 facts linked to drug dealing.

Despite the good results in most of the 11 categories that make up the Traffic Light, the number of events related to family violence is striking, in which the government institutions, whose purpose is the attention of the basic nucleus of society, will reinforce their timely care and prevention programs.

Among the municipalities with more red lights are Merida with four: for homicides, vehicle and business theft, as well as family violence. Tekax also appears with two, for car thefts and family violence, and with a colored light Hunucmá, for home robberies, like Ticul and Umán, for thefts of vehicles in both districts.

In comparison with the conclusions of January, during the second month of this year there is a noticeable improvement in the cases observed by the civil organization. In the first 31 days of 2018, Yucatan added six green lights, two yellow lights and three red lights, including homicides, kidnappings, extortions and robberies to vehicles and housing.

However, in February those figures were reversed and the red lights disappeared from the monthly measurement carried out by the Traffic Light, which assesses the standards related to peace in Mexico, fed by citizen complaints. Likewise, the transparency efforts of the authorities are sustained, with the purpose of promoting good governance through organized and informed community pressure.

In addition, based on the analysis of the National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Security (Envipe) and the Mexico Peace Index (IPM) 2017, the latter prepared by the Institute for Economy and Peace, Yucatán reports fewest crimes, which supports the data of the specialized firm Lantia Consultores, which last year positioned the entity in the last place with the fewest homicides, with an average rate of 1.9 per 100 thousand inhabitants.

The local statistics of February contrast remarkably with those of other territories, where according to the classification of Traffic Light, the three first places with the highest number of red lights are Aguascalientes, with nine of 11 and two green; Oaxaca, with 9 reds, one amber and one green, and Puebla, with eight reds, an amber and two green lights.

Another facet of the survey is reflected by the six Yucatecan municipalities in which all the lights are green, that is to say they give good accounts in the 11 points contained in this civil project. It is noteworthy that Kanasín and Oxkutzcab gave good accounts, because in the past they reflected various crimes. The other four jurisdictions with total acceptance are Chemax, Motul, Tizimín and Valladolid.
