Yucatan state congress rejects equal marriage proposal

In a secret ballot, the Congress of the State of Yucatan voted by majority against the Opinion that sought to establish Equal Marriage, resulting in rejection of a proposal by the Constitutional Points and Governance Commission. The vote was 15 against, nine in favor, with the PAN deputy, Kathia Bolio Pinelo, abstaining.

The session was attended by more than a hundred people, for and against Equal Marriage, and just moments before the session several people prayed at the doors of the plenary hall.

In favor of the project, Milagros Romero Bastarrachea (MC) and Fátima Perera Salazar (Morena) spoke, with arguments in favor of human rights and guaranteeing equality for all, respectively.

The president of the Board of Directors, Enrique Castillo Ruz, established that the method of voting would be by secret ballot, despite the fact that Silvia López Escoffié (MC) asked that the vote be done in a traditional way, by show of hands or electronically, so that it could be reflected on the screen.

“The Organic Law of this Legislative power empowers me to ensure order in the room, and the polarization that exists for the issue (means) we are going to do it secretly,” Castillo Ruz said.

Deputy Rosa Adriana Diaz Lizama (PAN) asked that the photographers were removed so that they did not capture the sense of the vote, to guarantee the secrecy, but the request was rejected by Castillo Ruz with the argument of freedom of the press.
