Merida consuls and state officials discuss Yucatan’s internationalization

AS PART OF CONSTANT communication on the most outstanding aspects of security, economic and tourist development, culture, science and technology, Yucatan state officials and members of the accredited consular corps in Yucatan met last week in Merida.

The meeting, convened by the General Coordinator of Advisors of the State Executive Power, Eric Rubio Barthell, was an opportunity to recognize the work of the Consul General of the United States of America, David Mico, who will shortly conclude his term of office in the Peninsula.

On behalf of Governor Rolando Zapata Bello, Rubio Barthell stressed the importance of internationalization in the development of the state, so he mentioned concrete examples such as the creation of an automated design laboratory conducted by the National Chamber of the Clothing Industry (Canaive ) with the support of the Milan Polytechnic.

Similarly, the officials also highlighted the Wolbachia bacterium implementation project to eradicate the mosquito Aedes aegypti with the support of Michigan State University, and the four-time presence of the Yucatan governor at the Havana International Fair, which has supported commercialization of local products in Cuba.

He also spoke about the establishment of links with China, which has generated cultural, tourist and economic exchange. All this, he said, has earned Yucatan recognition as the entity with the greatest growth in international activity by Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

DEPARTING US CONSUL HIGHLIGHTS COOPERATION

For his part, the US Consul thanked Yucatan officials for the support he has received and highlighted the the secretaries of State Government, the private sector and their counterparts, who have presented the projects that can be performed together.

This situation, along with the high levels of state security, leads to more American visitors, greater air connectivity between Merida and cities in the United States, as well as an increase in student exchanges, he said.

During the meeting, the consuls had a dialogue with state officials about strategic projects such as the International Congress Center (CIC), whose strategic alliance with Samsung will allow the promotion of Yucatan in Korea.

They addressed the theme of the Palace of Music, the creation of an Internet exchange node and the signing of an agreement with the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) for the expansion of telecommunications infrastructure in the state, among others.

On behalf of the accredited consular body, its coordinator, Mario Ancona Teigell, stressed that the peace of Yucatan is recognized abroad. He mentioned the interest of various French educational institutions in opening offices in the territory.

In terms of security, the actions taken to strengthen police and judicial capacities were highlighted, such as the training of police officers and investigators and the investment that in the framework of Escudo Yucatán has been carried out in fiber optics, security cameras, Internet and connection between the central headquarter and the Police of the 106 municipalities.

Attending the meeting were the Secretaries of Public Security, Luis Felipe Saidén Ojeda, of Tourist Promotion, Saúl Ancona Salazar, and of Culture and the Arts, Roger Metri Duarte, as well as the prosecutor, Ariel Aldecua Kuk.
