Oxkutzcab hosts “Marathon of the Birds” for first time in Yucatan’s Puuc region

OXKUTZCAB — In the municipal dome were registered 100 participants of the event called “The Marathon of the Birds”, which is organized by Pronatura, in coordination with the Inter-municipal Biocultural Board of Puuc, a governmental body that was founded in the year 2013 with the municipalities of Muna, Ticul, Santa Elena, Oxkutzcab, Tekax and Tzucacab.
Pronatura and the local town hall provided the venue of the event, which is the culmination of the Festival de las Aves activities.
On last Saturday night, participants received their participation package.
The biologist Ricardo Pasos gave a lecture about the birds and their habitat in the Yucatan Peninsula, the characteristics of the flora and its relationship with the birds found in the JIBIOPUUC reserve.
Pronatura spokeswoman Marigel Campos reported that for this year 2018 the closing of the event was held on Sunday, involving people from other states, such as Campeche and Quintana Roo, among others.
The awards ceremony was held after the 9 participating teams delivered to the qualifying jury the ballots with the birds that were registered.
The mayor of Oxkutzcab, Raúl Romero Chel, organized a closing breakfast for all the participants of the event. It is the first occasion that an event like this one was held in the southern Yucatan municipality. It should be noted that the teams visited the demarcation of the 6 municipalities of the JIBIOPUUC, which is considered the largest ecological reserve in the state of Yucatan.
