The tamal: a Latin American delicacy with many guises

The tamal is originally from Mexico, and its name comes from the Nahuatl “Tamalli”, which means “wrapped”. In Latin America there are around 400 tamales and some of them do not contain the main element that is corn.

Recently, this dish has become a worldwide phenomeon, therefore, here we tell you what tamales are typical of five Latin American countries and how they are prepared.

El Salvador: Indian chicken tamales or chicken are the most popular in the cuisine of this country.

The Indian chicken tamale contains tomatoes, green chilies, onions, garlic cloves, butter, herbs and corn dough. This dish is usually accompanied with a hot drink such as coffee or chocolate.

Venezuela: Here this dish is called hallaca and is distinguished because it is only eaten in the month of December in Christmas celebrations.

The hallaca is prepared with corn masa seasoned with chicken broth and covered with achiote with a beef filling. Venezuelans usually accompany this dish with bread, green olives, salad and raisins.

Guatemala: In the communities of this country, specifically on Christmas Eve, the inhabitants have the tradition of sharing black, red or sweet tamales in gratitude for the end of the year. However, the most typical tamale in this country is red, which contains tomato, chili, sesame, annatto butter and salt.

The Guatemalans accompany this delicious dish with chocolate, yolk bread and punch.

Peru: The green tamale is one of the most traditional and comes from the Piura region. It contains coriander and with this ingredient acquires its color and aroma. This type of tamal has no filling; They are usually a companion to the seco de cabrito.

Costa Rica: The pork tamale is the most consumed by Costa Ricans. This dish contains corn, cooked rice, pork rib, lard, bacon, carrot, pepper, cumin and achiote.
