According to Bent Lautrup from the World Diabetes Foundation, Mexicans urgently need to return to their traditional cuisine, based on cereals, grains, and animal products, which could help in the fight against diabetes and could reduce obesity.

He explained that although other countries face similar challenges, the problem in Mexico is worse; but he emphasized that the efforts made by Mexican authorities have been important. Nevertheless, more radical solutions should be implemented, in order to generate a greater impact.

Additionally, according to the National Medical Sciences and Nutrition Institute “Salvador Zubirán,” the traditional Mexican diet includes cereals, grains, plants, and animals products low in fat, as well as foods such as corn, beans, pumpkin, chili, quelites, fruits, vegetables, and seeds.

The expert said that “it should be taken into account that it is a change process, but it was to be implemented since an early age.”

Lautrup explained that the World Diabetes Foundation has supported Mexico in the fight against diabetes by investing USD $4.2 million in the last 10 years.

Among the organization’s projects, it has opened a clinic specialized in diabetes. Also, at the clinic, there is a cooking classroom where people can learn to cook in a healthy way.

It has also promoted health programs in Campeche, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Tamaulipas, and Chihuahua.
